The issue of abortion law has been troubling us all for many years. It has become even more urgent lately with the emergence of the policy of excommunicating politicians who vote for abortion laws that is mandated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and Pope St John Paul II and being applied by some Bishops in the United States. During the run-up to the Irish referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment and permit abortion in Irish law, in a radio interview a Bishop was asked the question: ‘Can a Catholic in good conscience vote Yes?’
