Since the Second Vatican Council (1962–65), the impact of the Catholic Church’s teaching on non-Christian religions has been dramatic. John Henry Newman is renowned for having spoken of the ‘development of doctrine’. However, what has taken place within the Church over the last few decades constitutes nothing less than a decisive paradigm shift in the way that Catholicism regards its evangelising mission and, in particular, how it interprets Christ’s great evangelizing commission: ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…’
