The Book of Acts tells of an event in the life of Saint Paul when
he visited Athens. He spoke in the synagogue and in the streets
with the philosophers. He got a mixed reception to say the least.
It is reported that they laughed at him inquiring: “Does this parrot
know what he is talking about?” Acts 17: 18. Have you ever been
called a parrot? It has never been said in my hearing but that does
not mean it has not been uttered. I admit to having a certain concern
that I too will be laughed at, as I write about the Catholic Church as
a sacrament of hope. The Church has had bad press ever since the
sexual abuse crisis. This is the Jubilee Year of Hope I tell myself,
so maybe it is the opportune time to address the topic.
