Teachers’ Perspectives on Spirituality in Catholic Primary Schools

3.50

Spirituality is notoriously difficult to define. Although it is a complex and contested concept, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) stresses that every child has a right to spiritual development. In Ireland, this right is also recognised in the 1998 Education Act and the 1999 Primary School Curriculum. While there are multiple understandings of what spirituality entails, when it comes to education, there is a lack of detailed and specific guidance for teachers on how they might support students’ spiritual development.
