All dying within the space of a year during the Second World War three writers of genius, who never met nor knew of each other (although Etty Hillesum and Edith Stein were for seven days in the same transit camp in Holland), yet they have much in common in their response to the unprecedented crisis of their time. All three were Jewish (although Simone Weil did not like to be categorized with a racial identity that was not part of her own self-understanding).
