In the nineteenth century, Lincolnshire was popularly known in Catholic communities as Mary’s Meadow. I’m not sure whether this was due to the daffodils which grew everywhere, or the buttercup meadows beside the many rivers. In truth, such glimpses of the religious imagination are sometimes difficult to prove, as Eamon Duffy’s The Stripping of the Altars movingly
