The number of students taking theology as a subject at third level in Ireland is in decline for many institutions that have taught the subject for some time. The trend is worrying, not just in terms of the discipline in the academy, but also in terms of an educational service to wider public life, where the religious dimension of the human person is necessarily an abiding reality (however one might relate to it for oneself).
