Not long before my seventeenth birthday, as I was about to commence my first year as an undergraduate at Queen’s, in Belfast, some eager impulse drove me to seek out and enter the University Bookshop, which was situated quite close to the campus. I had an obscure notion of some of the books I wanted to get hold of: one author on my mental list was Plato.
