Synodality, the sensus fidei and Doctrine

As synodality gains traction within the Catholic Church, globally and in Ireland, we may anticipate tensions and questions around its connection with doctrine, in particular concerning contested, so-called ‘hot button’ issues. With regard to the latter, it is clear that several teachings to do with gender (for example, the ordination of women) and sex (for example, Humanae Vitae and contraception) have not been ‘received’ by the faithful, while others (for example on homosexuality and in vitro fertilization) are seemingly headed in the same direction.
