William Bedford – The Seeds are Sown

From the titles of some of her writings – The Patriot’s History
of Ireland, The Speeches of the Liberator, The Famine in Ireland,
Women’s Work in Modern Society – you might think that Margaret
Anna Cusack was a fiery contemporary feminist, concerned only
with the political issues of her day. Her campaign on the Irish
Famine (1845-52) for instance resulted in the creation of the
Famine Relief Fund. Her concern for the sufferings of the poor and
the place of women in society led her into conflict with the Irish
establishment, both clerical and secular. But she also attracted the
interest of Cardinal Wiseman in England.
