Colum Cille famously left Ireland and founded the monastery of Iona on a small island in the middle of the Hebridean sea-lanes. Our scanty evidence suggests he left Ireland in 563; that Iona was founded relatively quickly and that he died there in 597 after a career which, at various stages, involved journeys ranging from the Irish midlands to the north of the Great Glen in Scotland.
