Everyone knows that Catholic teaching speaks of two possible final destinies for human beings – eternal life (heaven) and eternal loss (hell). Beyond that, however, there is a common misunderstanding about the relative standing in Christian thought of the two destinies. It is taken that they are of equal standing and that as we go through life they lie before us as equally possible.
