A very, very long time ago I used to run on a relay team.1 And the interesting thing about relay running is the manner in which the baton is passed on from one runner to the next; it is not a case of the first runner running up to the second and simply handing it over, or, indeed, the second standing still until receiving the baton passively, and then running on with it.
