This is the third instalment in a tryptic of articles dealing with the question of studying theology at third level as part of a humanities degree. I have been considering a significant crisis that is emerging in some institutions with a view to exploring how a department, school, or faculty might respond. In the first paper I dealt with some inadequate responses that not only exacerbate the nascent crisis but reflect a diminished understanding of theology itself in the academy.
